So how did you spend your New Year’s Day?

by Hayley E Lavik on January 2, 2012

Various schools of thought about resolutions, change, and fresh starts on January first suggest what we do on the first day of the new year sets the tone for how the rest of the year will go.

Want a better year? Start with a great day. Want to be more active? Go for a walk on the first. Want to be more productive this year? Yep, spend your first day writing.

So…

I spent my first day of 2012 eating chips, popcorn, and chocolate while lying on the couch in my PJs watching an Avatar: The Last Airbender marathon on TV.

This is totally going to be a productive and fulfilling year for me!

Based on yesterday, how’s your year looking?

Oh dear…because I basically ate the day away. Not my fault though, my MIL made an awesome meal and it would have been rude not to partake. So based on the above mentioned philosophy I’m going to be very, very full :)

Today I organized my office and now I’m rewarding myself with a Torchwood marathon!

  2. I usually spend January 1st putting away the Christmas stuff, cleaning the house and generally speaking, getting ready for the new year with a clean slate. I also managed to read for a while and do some laundry. Very exciting stuff for me!

Happy new year and best of luck in 2012!

    • I’m impressed, Patricia! I could never manage that much productivity for a January 1st. Christmas decorations usually linger around here until the 5th, and then we get fed up with them until the 10th, and then finally put them away :)

  3. New Year’s Day? I thought it was how you spent New Year’s Eve that determined the next year. Well, January 1st I wrote, blogged, and watched House Hunters on HGTV, so that sounds like a great year to me!

    • Hi Emma, it could be both! I’ve seen a lot of different schools of thought about these things. Sounds like you had a good mix for the day.

  4. You couldn’t have warned me a week ago? Looks as though I’ll be active as I managed a walk. I also blogged and spent the evening with friends. What hurts is I didn’t write a word of fiction, yet fiction-writing is to be my focus in 2012. Gah.

    • Hah! Sorry Pat, I didn’t start running across remarks mentioning it until the 1st. You’re off to a better start than I am, between the walking and friends. Thankfully I don’t subscribe to these things, so I’m sure we’ll both be fine :)

  5. I took all my Christmas stuff down, put them away, cleaned the basement, wrote a couple of blogs, added 500 words to my prequel and fine tuned some of my goals. My word, Hayley, if you’re right I’m going to work myself to death this year.

  6. Hayley, I really hope you’re right. I spent the morning of January 1 editing, and then I went to the gym in the afternoon. I just hope I continue as I started!
